Northern Lights Hunt: Small Group 4x4 Super Truck Tour
Chase the Northern Lights while drinking hot chocolate and listening to stories, in a winter-ready 4x4 Super Truck with 40-inch tires, capable of tackling icy roads that buses cannot. This small group (14 people max) adventure under Iceland's magical night sky is led by an enthusiastic local guide who is an expert aurora seeker, photographer and storyteller.

Overview
The Lights
The Northern Lights are consistently inconsistent. They may appear for a few moments or for hours, faint and slow one minute, then bright and dancing across the whole sky the next. No two sightings are alike, which is why no two of our tours are alike either. There is no fixed route and no scripted stop. There is a guide, a forecast, and a dark road out of the city.
The Route
Your guide spends the day studying the forecasts before you ever step into the vehicle. Solar activity, cloud cover, weather and road conditions decide where we go, and the most promising route is mapped out that afternoon. The hunt begins as we leave the bright lights of Reykjavík behind and head into the dark countryside toward the clearest skies. We travel in a winter-ready 4x4 Super Truck with 40-inch tires, built for icy conditions or smaller backroads that buses cannot take, so the route follows the sky and not the pavement. As the night goes on, your guide keeps watching the cloud cover and solar activity, and we relocate when the conditions shift to give you the best chance of seeing the aurora.
The Local Difference
A quiet sky does not mean a boring drive in the dark, which is a story all too common in Iceland's mass tourism sector. Your guide is an expert aurora seeker and also a storyteller, sharing Viking sagas, myths of the Norse gods and the folklore that shaped this country over a cup of hot chocolate, along with the science of what is happening above you. When the lights do appear, your guide has professional camera gear to capture high-quality aurora portraits of you beneath them. The group is guaranteed to be small, with a maximum of 14 guests. Northern Lights tours commonly run on 70-seat buses, and many that call themselves "small group" carry 19 or even 28 passengers. This is for travelers who want a personal, unhurried night with a local who makes the evening worthwhile whatever the sky decides. It is not for those looking for the cheapest seat on a big bus.

Loved this tour!!! The guide was a great and shared wonderful stories and fun facts about Iceland! Best hot chocolate ever! AND...we saw the Northern Lights! His enthusiasm is contagious!
If you’re looking for an unforgettable experience, this is it. It is not possible to recommend it enough. The trip was absolutely incredible, and there’s something almost magical about the guide, which genuinely seems to boost your chances of catching the northern lights dancing across the sky. From the very first moment until the very end, I felt completely cared for, relaxed, and in the best hands possible. This wasn’t just a tour, it was an experience crafted with passion.
We had an incredible night hunting for the northern lights. The guide is a brilliant story teller and was such a delightful host and guide for us. We had the best time, full of laughs and sharing stories, and yes, we caught the northern lights on the most beautifully clear night. The sky was glowing with starlight and the northern lights made a lovely little show for us which our guide captured with his amazing photography. Me and my friend were so pleased! A special mention for some yummy home made hot coco!
Wow! The Aurora put on a great show and our guide made a difference for the tour with his explanation of the Northern Lights, the locations and his stories. Coming up from New Zealand where the Southern Lights are spectacular, this tour was certainly a great way to see the Aurora Borealis.
The tour ended up being even better than I expected and was a great way to get out of the city and experience the Icelandic night sky.
Our guide was fantastic. He was incredibly entertaining and knowledgeable, sharing stories and insights about Iceland while making the whole experience feel relaxed and fun. It was clear he knew exactly where to go and how to make the most of the conditions that night.
The tour itself was very well run, and the added touches like hot cocoa and Icelandic candy made it feel extra special while we waited for the lights. It felt like a really thoughtful and memorable experience rather than just a quick excursion.
This has been an absolutely fantastic experience! Unbelievable northern lights at the first spot, an extremely charming guide, friendly and knowledgeable - it felt like being on tour with an old friend. We can only recommend the tour again and again!
What made this experience special was our guide's commitment to getting us not only to great pictures but to great viewing spots. The combination of the cold and wind made me think that our group would definitely miss out on the pictures but regardless of those elements we received the full experience. There was an added bonus that we the group was very small. Worth booking!
An amazing tour. Our guide was a brilliant aurora hunter and a great story teller. He kept the trip fun and engaging. We finally saw the aurora towards the end of the tour but he kept us engaged with stories of Icelandic culture, a perfect cup of hot chocolate, pastries and when the auroras did show, a professional photograph with the lights in the background. I highly recommend.
