The Glacier
Most ice cave tours in the Vatnajökull region operate on a conveyor belt: large groups, short walks, one cave, back to the bus. The caves themselves are extraordinary, but the experience is diluted by the crowds funneling into the same formations at the same time. This tour exists because one local guide decided to do the opposite. A modified Land Cruiser takes your group to the glacier's edge. From there, you walk 5 to 7 kilometers (3-4.5 mi) deeper onto the ice than any bus tour will take you.
The Exploration
The journey begins with a 4x4 ride to one of Vatnajökull's outlet glaciers. From there, you gear up and step onto the ice. The first stop is a natural ice cave, chosen by your guide based on which formation is in the best condition that season. Every year the glacier produces new caves, canyons, and moulins, and your guide scouts them before the season begins. Inside the cave, you'll have time to absorb the moment surrounded by luring walls of deep blue ice, listen to the sound of meltwater running beneath your feet, and wonder at the scale of something the glacier built and will eventually reclaim. From the cave, the route continues onto the glacier, where crevasses, meltwater channels, and formations that shift between visits open up ahead of you. The pace follows the group. If conditions are good and the energy is there, you go further.

We booked a whole day tour and went to 2 tunnels and 2 caves. It was absolutely amazing and the guide made sure at any point that everyone was feeling well and safe. He brought his dog which made the experience even better. Would 100% recommend booking the tour and really feel like a glacier explorer and avoid crowds!
My partner and I were the only ones on this trip with Reynir and his dog Myrkvi. It was fantastic. I was at some glaciers around the world but it is something completely different to be on and in one. Even though the tour was slightly more than 5 hours it was never boring. Reynir explained everything and answered all questions. We also got information about Iceland and its people in general. It was fun to have Myrkvi with us.
Our tour with Reynir (and his beautiful dog Myrkvi) was a once in a lifetime experience. He took our small group on the Vatnajökull glacier, carefully timing everything so we had the entire glacier to ourselves and completely avoided the crowds. Unlike the larger tours, Reynir guided us to spots that most visitors never see. We explored the popular Sparkle Cave, however arrived at the perfect moments for crowd-free, uninterrupted experiences.
Reynir is the BEST!! This hike was one of the coolest things we have done on our visit to Iceland. Cannot talk about him and his tours enough. He has YEARS of experience and loves what he does. Plus, he has the only glacier dog in the national park...Myrkvi was a great addition to the tour!
No proper words exist to describe the experience of seeing these caves for the first time. We’re so thankful to our guide Reynir who made this experience so adventurous and exciting! I knew the tour would be amazing (as I had read reviews before booking) but the reality exceeded our expectations. Reynir’s planning was perfect so we avoided crowds and spent enough time at every place, without rush. We didn’t see just one famous cave but also other spectacular ice objects. My favourite was the “ice maze”! So blue and exciting! We truly experienced the glacier and Reynir showed us the most beautiful parts of it. And of course we felt very safe and the ice crampons were high quality — it was easy to walk on ice. We saw a lot of northern deers too. The meeting point was at Jökulsárlón lagoon so we also had an opportunity to visit that beautiful spot! And diamond beach too!! We’re so happy about that day and will cherish these memories forever. Thank you Reynir for making the glacier experience so magical for us and for helping us (we didn’t have a car and couldn’t get to the meeting point ourselves). This was my favorite adventure of my 8 day trip! The Guide, Reynir, was so knowledgeable and took us to areas of the glacier far from all the large groups so it felt like we were alone. More beautiful than I could have imagined.
Amazing glacier hike and breath taking natural ice caves with so many shades of blue. Reynir, our guide, was very knowledgeable of the terrain. We were out on the glacier for many hours and visited 3 very different ice caves on the hike, from darker grayer ones to the turquoise blue crystals. Each was impressive enough on its own. This tour took us further out than most of the ice cave tours did. Definitely a highlight of our trip and highly recommend it if you're looking for a unique experience or longer time out on the glacier.
